What an opportunity to own your own business.  This long time business is located in Bowdon, North Dakota a small community of 136 residents in Wells County, in Central North Dakota. This is certainly hunting country and with the locker plant there is plenty of processing of venison as well as processing livestock for area farmers.

The grocery store is a newer building with metal siding and an interior that is bright and open to take care of all of those grocery needs.  The store is well stocked with practically anything you need without leaving town, what a benefit for the area people.  The hours of operation are Monday through Friday 8:30-5:30 and Saturdays 8:30-2:00. The store has been operated by the owners with one additional staff person being hired.

The green colored fresh produce cooler has a bright surge of that green which makes you want to stop and fill your shopping cart. There is a cooler for storing packaged meat as well as a cooler for your dairy products.  There are two new freezers that are presently leased by the owners, at the end of the lease period they may be purchased at that time.  These two coolers are bright and refreshing and have certainly added much to the operation of the store.  There was just a new compressor installed that takes care of the mentioned coolers.

At the back of the grocery store is a large walk-in cooler for storing milk and milk products as well as other items that need to be refrigerated.  This is also the spot in the building where there is a break out room for the help to eat a snack or have a quick cup of coffee.

The locker plant has been in the community for many years, when the grocery store was built it was attached to the locker plant so there is access back and forth from the store to the locker.  The locker plant operates as a “Custom Exempt” plant and is inspected by the Department of Health four times a year.  The Custom Exempt status means that it does not butcher their own beef but butchers for area farmers and ranchers.

During the hunting season they are so busy with venison processing they just about have trouble keeping up, which certainly is good thing to have happen.  The locker plant is well equipped with everything needed from the start to the finish in the processing effort.  They have a sausage stuffer, grinder, as well as a tenderizer.  They have lockers that are rented to area residents who store their own meat and pick it up as needed. 

The grocery store is well stocked, there a number of good quality vendors who the owners have been able to depend on during the operation of the business. The store also displays items that are made by community people, this is very handy in the event that you need a quick gift, well just stop in the store, pick up a gift and a card as well.
